WHO WE ARE

The Fitzroy Basin Elders Committee is a voluntary coalition of Elders and member traditional owner groups who are collectively committed to improving the natural and cultural environment of Central Queensland and in reinstating the knowledge and wisdom of the Elders.

Our goal is to bring about reconciliation and sustainable management of the Central Queensland natural and cultural environment.  The Fitzroy Basin Elders Committee was incorporated in May 2000 under the Associations Incorporations Act 1981.

The Fitzroy Basin Elders Committee also supports and is involved in the Community Justice Programme via Murri Court and Youth Justice Programmes and the Rockhampton Reconnect program which focuses on reconciling 'at-risk' youth with their families and the broader mainstream community via intervention and referral to other agencies.

WHAT WE'RE ON ABOUT

  • To develop and maintain effective regional communication by working closely with Aboriginal
organisations and government agencies in the region.

  • To provide a forum for traditional owners to discuss natural and cultural resource issues to
    move towards on-ground actions.

  • To identify and prioritise Indigenous issues in natural resource management and facilitate
    support for Aboriginal groups.

  • To undertake community, social and justice activities to improve the welfare of Indigenous
    people in the region.
